Grace Dent has the best seat in the house for the third and final night of Glastonbury music as she watches Faithless, Stevie Wonder and Orbital on TV
Friday: champagne with Dizzee, Snoop and Gorillaz
Saturday: cider with Scissor Sisters, Pet Shop Boys and Muse
OK, tin hats on for Glastontelly part three. Oh how wonderful to be at home. At this moment in Somerset, thousands of mentally-awry, swivel-eyed people with third-degree burns are staggering about in circles.
"The foulest stench is in the air, the funk of 40,000 years" is how Vincent Price would describe the underwear situation of these poor souls, as they slosh back Feminax with mouthfuls of warm Teacher's, blotting out the dawn prospect of packing a five-man tent into a carrying case the size of a Malteser packet.
But not you and I, dear heart. We're AMAZING. Keep me company from 7.30pm for the final night of varied and scintillating BBC coverage.
7.30pm: Good evening people. Just savouring the tunesome La Roux on red-button coverage doing her big hit about the time she worked in a tropical bird supplies shop: "Going In for the Trill" (coughs). Coincidentally the rest of her set, to the sober ear, sounds like an angry sea cormorant trying to retrieve a portion of chips from a squeaky wheelie bin.
7.45pm: Slash is over on the red button chugging through Appetite For Destruction hits with...
If you're moaning about where all the kids are at Glastonbury then maybe you need to get down the front for Tinie Tempah, Giggs and N-Dubz
Where are all the kids? That's a refrain often heard at Glastonbury in recent years and not just from the mouths of parents who accidentally passed out in the green fields. The number of young people at the festival had been thought to be declining, perhaps inexorably, but if anyone's wondering where the kids are at, let it be known that they're all down the front at Tinie Tempah.
I know this largely because I spent my Saturday at Dance East listening to a programme comprised entirely of English rappers. It proved to be very popular. Mobbed throughout the day, the tent thronged not only with teenagers, but actual, small, sunburnt children.
Rap and â€' if we're to be honest â€' black music in general has long been a minority interest at Glastonbury. White men with guitars, yes. Black men with DJs, less so. As Noel Gallagher once observed so succinctly, hip-hop in Glastonbury was wrong.
That was before Jay-Z turned the tables on the 90s rocker with a headline set that made the news and drew ginormous crowds. Last year, Dizzee Rascal performed a similar feat. The press stopped calling Dizzee a rapper after that, he was now a pop star. But what had really changed was not Dizzee's status but people's taste.
So that's what's really being played in...

Grace Dent settles down in front of the telly to watch Muse, Scissor Sisters and Pet Shop Boys take to the stage for the second night of music
Friday night: Florence and the Machine, Gorillaz and Lou Reed
Sunday night: Faithless, Stevie Wonder and Orbital
Day two of Glastonbury on the Sofa. I'm still confident that giving the festival a swerve was wise and noble. Look at me, bushy-tailed and fragrant! I didn't crawl from my sweatbox tent this morning, dehydrated to the size of a Californian raisin. My alarm clock was NOT the low mooing of a jaded rock wife berating her au pair for losing all her raggedy-haired children in the Green Field 12 hours ago. Oh no. Everything in Dent Mansions is most genteel. No one with an infected lip-ring will be waggling my chakras or handcuffing me to one of Ozric Tentacles. Unlike in 2006, I won't be discovering a naked woman lying in a pile of falafel boxes behind the Jazz World stage, grinning and pleasuring herself.
I'm watching Glastonbury on the BBC instead. Pet Shop Boys, Shakira, Muse etc. Come and keep me company.
7.51pm: Hello. I've been drinking cider and watching red-button coverage. Thank heavens some clever-clogs marketing person decided that if you stick ice-cubes in cider it's not street-drinker fluid anymore. Cider certainly took the edge off 40 minutes of Imogen Heap's relentless fairy-tale screeching and Seasick Steve...
Radiohead's Thom Yorke surprises fans with a set at Glastonbury, but stand-in headliners Gorillaz struggle to impress.
Okay, gang - if you guys keep up with the blogs that talk about indie rock and the like, maybe you have heard about how last night's party at Shea Stadium, celebrating the success of the performance by Wavves, Dom and Cloud Nothings at the Knitting Factory earlier that evening, hit an enormous snag when some rascal threw a bottle off of Shea's scenic balcony and shattered the back window of a police car. Believe it or not, I was scheduled to act as a DJ at this party, sharing wheels-of-steel duties with Ryan Schrieber of Pitchfork Media fame. I arrived late due to various public transit mishaps, as the police were seemingly just cooling down from their earlier rage(and who could really blame them?), and were on their way out. It looked at this point like the party might be DOA - the organizers were unsure if there was going to be any sort of DJing at all, which was annoying to me because I had schlepped all of my pedals and my four track and so on (I use these when I DJ, for reasons that are still unclear) all the way from Greenpoint, which isn't the end of the world or anything, but not the sort of thing I do at one am for my health. Whatever the fate of the party, those few who were still in attendance seemed to be in a big hurry to get out. Before long, Shea Stadium held...
Would it be Coldplay? Or Pearl Jam? Or maybe even Cliff Richard? No! It was (half of) Radiohead, with a rather brilliant stripped-back acoustic set
Glastonbury potentiates rumour. In the pre-internet era, that was because the site felt weirdly cut off from the rest of the country. In the absence of news from the outside world, myths stepped in to fill the gap. So it was that in the mid 1990s, every Glastonbury was beset by the story that Cliff Richard had passed on: quite why the Peter Pan of pop was singled out for an annual exaggerated report of his death remains a mystery. The proliferation of mobile phones and internet access has at least put a stop to people telling you Cliff's snuffed it, but it's made the situation different, rather than better. No sooner have the mysterious words "special guest" appeared on the bill than half the festival takes to Twitter and the message boards to speculate wildly. By mid-afternoon today, the site was awash with increasingly demented suggestions as to who might fill the blank 8:30pm slot on the Park stage. Paul McCartney was going to play. So were Biffy Clyro. And Coldplay. Actually, Paul McCartney and Biffy Clyro and Coldplay are going to have a jam, possibly with Pearl Jam. It's going to be a Pearl Jam jam. And so it went on.
By 8:30pm, there were still people staring at the Park stage in eager anticipation, without actually knowing...

England's massive Glastonbury Festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary this weekend at Worthy Farm in Somerset. There's still two more days left to the fest, but a particularly huge occurrence has already taken place: a surprise set today from Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood.
According to At Ease, the pair were introduced by festival organizer Michael Eavis. Yorke, introducing himself as "Thomas Yorke", then stepped out on stage performed a few solo tunes. Greenwood later joined him. Check out the setlist below:

The Creators Project, a new arts venture from Vice and Intel, is throwing a massive launch party at Milk Studios in New York on June 26. The throwdown already had a pretty sick lineup: Interpol, Sleigh Bells, Die Antwoord, Neon Indian, Gang Gang Dance, the Rapture, Salem, N.A.S.A., and Mark Ronson.
And now the show has a special surprise headliner: M.I.A., probably the exact person you'd get if you somehow transformed all the other acts on the bill into one human being. The event also features lots of multimedia art, including works by Animal Collective, the xx, Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Spike Jonze, and more.
The Creators Project has also announced a big London show, set for July 17 at Victoria House. Right now, the bill includes Mark Ronson, Filthy Dukes, Kele, Trevor Jackson, Yuck, Flats, and Hudson Mohawke. It'll also feature exhibitions, film screenings, and multimedia installations from people like Animal Collective, Spike Jonze, and Nick Zinner.
Future Creators Project shows are also planned for Sao Paolo on August 14, Seoul on August 28, and Beijing on September 17.
-- Serotonin is the name of the new album from UK rockers Mystery Jets. It's out July 13 via Rough Trade and produced by Chris Thomas (the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK", Pulp's Different Class). Watch the video for "Dreaming of Another World" here.
-- Black Dice's Eric Copeland has a new LP out on Dean Spunt from No Age's PPM label called Strange Days. It's a limited edition, white vinyl deal that's on sale right now.
-- Country-tinged indie rockers the Love Language release their second LP (and first for Merge) on July 13. Download the track "Heart to Tell" here.
-- The xx, Gil-Scott Heron, Air, and Florence and the Machine are some of the artists set for July's outdoor concert series at London's Somerset House, running from July 8-18 Click here for the full schedule.
Today, Conan O'Brien's Team Coco website premiered the Dead Weather's video for "Blue Blood Blues", recorded live at Third Man Records. The clip, which you can watch below, was filmed in very, very high-contrast black and white-- like, extremely high-contrast, to the point where you can barely tell what's going on at any given moment.
Pro tip for next time: If you've got Jack White and Alison Mosshart in your video, you might want to make the two of them clearly visible.
In their blog entry for the video, the Team Coco folks got in a nice line: "Hey, as a thank you, maybe we'll let the Dead Weather premiere some never before seen Ruben Studdard jokes in their liner notes of their next album!"

Beyond doubt, I've got the better deal here. I'm watching Glastonbury all weekend on TV: happy, horizontal, sun-stroke free and lemon-fresh of knickers. Don't get me wrong, I love Glastonbury, I'm just relieved I've not been there since Wednesday, broiling in a Millets two-man tent, camped within earshot of DJ Nut Nut doing his 7am trance set at the Cosmic Cow smoothie stall.
Oh yes, give me BBC coverage instead. Give me red-button access and multi-platform media minute-by-minute wotnot. Give me Lauren Laverne with one hand clutched to an ear filling time while an editor still cuts Pyramid Stage VT. Let me watch the entire Vampire Weekend without someone on "legal E" (aka: ringworm antibiotic/Pro-plus) dragging me two miles overland to watch a strobe-lit forest glade puppet show.
I'll be here from 7pm, starting with BBC3's coverage with Edith Bowman and Reggie Yates. Come and keep me company. (Didgeridoos and laughing gas not allowed).

6.07pm: Two. Two. Two. Check. Check. CHECK. Two. Is this thing on? *sound checks with tuneless version of Mustang Sally for entire hour doing "muso concentration overbite" face*

Last week was all about the bossanova backbeat, this week we're stalking robbers, moustache-twiddlers and the truly evil
I think Pairubu had it right. The South American topic was limiting and we did end up heading down a road where the signposts largely read "bossanova â€' next exit". But do I think this was a bad thing? Why, quite the opposite m'lud. It's a good thing now and again to go headlong into one or two styles, particularly those which one (I say "one", I mean "me") might be less familiar with. Particular thanks to ejaydee and Sao Paolo-ite farofa for their contributions â€' muy rico.
A list (and column in which I attempt to claim the spirit of tropicalia for the list):
MC Junior and Leonardo â€' Rap das Armas
Sepultura â€' Ratamahatta
Big Audio Dynamite â€' Sambadrome
Burt Bacharach â€' South American Getaway
Joao Gilberto/Stan Getz â€' Corcovado
Tom Ze â€' A Brigo do Edificio Italio Como Hilton Hotel
The War On Drugs â€' Buenos Aires Beach
Roxy Music â€' Amazona
Caetano Veloso â€' Tropicalia
Roberto Carlos Lange â€' Amazonian Pacific
Here, also, is your B list. I'm afraid that my imminent departure for Glastonbury (join us here throughout the weekend for peerless coverage!) means I'm going to skip my explanations this week. Hope you can forgive me. Suffice to say a lot of this list had similar qualities to those I enjoyed in the A list.

From classical music to comic hero-baiting pop-punk ... take a trip through the depths of Steven Wells's music taste
Steven Wells, the late and legendary NME and Guardian journalist, died one year ago today. Among the many moved to write in tribute 12 months ago was James Brown, former editor of Loaded. He declared, rather oddly, that Swells had "little true interest in music". This was utterly wrong. Wells was captivated by music. You couldn't chat for 30 seconds without him starting a "Have you heard ...?" discussion.
To prove it, and to remind ourselves of the kind of music Swells championed (anything to make you "laugh, wince, shout ... dance, copulate, riot, or write an angry letter to the Daily Mail), his wife, Katharine Jones, gave the Guardian access to the most played tracks on Steven's iPod. Because iPods know our taste better than we do.
We may kid ourselves that we like highbrow indie and critics' darlings. However, as Swells might have put it: "Your iPod's number-of playlist is a little Gestapo taste-Nazi in your pocket, kicking away your vegetarian knees, smacking the Tibetan twat-hat off your noggin and hurling you against walls by your shrivelled, indie-withered genitals until you CONFESS! CONFESS, VERDAMMTER ENGLANDER! YOU LOVE ATOMIC KITTEN'S WHOLE AGAIN! TWELF THOUSUND PLAYS!'" Although he'd probably have said it with more exclamation marks.
So here is a selection of the most-played songs on Swells's iPod, passing the highly scientific threshold of seven plays or more....
Vampire Weekend has added a number of dates to their upcoming Fall tour. The entire run of shows include dates in some legendary venues. They include a show at Red Rocks, a sold-out three night stand ...
Think you can do better than our crack team of Glastonbury reviewers? Let's hear from you
Hi. The A-team have gone off to have fun in the fields, leaving myself and a few other unfortunates locked in the office with the brooms to keep the place clean and tidy. While they're running around reviewing the likes of Muse and Gorillaz we'd like you lot to help us get a flavour of the more offbeat parts of the festival. Are there any would-be reviewers out there ready to press their sharp eyes and educated ears into service?
We're especially interested in hearing about the gigs the usual reviewers cannot reach, so if you have a burning opinion about anything you've seen, in person or even just on the telly, get writing. Send your long-considered views, your scribbly rants, your cloud-parting revelations (no longer than 200 words, please) to glastoreviews@guardian.co.uk and we'll publish the best ones we receive right here. If you don't fancy strutting your critical stuff on the main stage, you can always just heckle from the crowd in the comments section below. Hope to hear from you soon ...
First up, we have Chris Hodgson, who has plunged straight in among the headliners, with a savage tale of cruelty to Gorillaz:
If Amy Winehouse on the Pyramid stage a few years ago was like watching a car crash, watching Gorillaz headline the main stage on Glastonbury Friday 2010 was like watching the space...
Dazed speak to The Invisible about playing the next War Child event in London...
Next Thursday 1st July, The Invisible are set to play alongside live acts such as the likes of O.Children, Becoming Real, and DJ sets from Friendly Fires, Disco 3000 (Erol Alkan), Casper C, Oneman, Solo & Mumdance. Supported by DJ Hero and in aid of War Child, Cargo will see the return of War Child's annual Army of You London showcase in Shoreditch.
Army of You aims to raise awareness and funds for War Child, an international charity working with children in the world's most dangerous war zones â€' Iraq, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. War Child works with children ... article continues »

The wrong moniker can lead to empty gigs and lost royalties. How to avert this disaster? One app thinks it has the answer
The other day, I came across an advert for a band-naming app that exclaimed: "With no cheesy names like 'Purple Fuzzy Dog', you'll get results that you can actually use!" After reading the examples, including SilentSound Wires (for electro pop), Spark Darkens the Dream (for emo) and Weakness in the Hero (for metal/hardcore), Purple Fuzzy Dog didn't sound so bad after all.
Far too many musicians spend too little time on naming their band, failing to factor in all the repercussions a bad title can have on their career. Of course, the first issue to consider is a name that no other act is using, which gets increasingly difficult with each passing year. As a teenager, I was going to call my band Love â€' until I realised it had already been taken before I was even born.
Today, coming up with a decent name that no one else is using is not enough. In fact, a "cool" name can often work against you these days, thanks to the physics of search-engine optimisation (SEO). Try running a Google search for the band Girls â€' or even Spotify â€' and see what happens. An endless list of titles and group names with the word "girls" in them. I thought I'd try their album's name, but as it's called Album...

Last year, we marked dark and dramatic songstress Zola Jesus as a Rising act. And, since then, she's released an incredible EP (with an equally amazing cover), put together a startlingly good live set, and announced dates with indie biggies like Fever Ray and Wolf Parade. In other words, she's doing pretty well, which is cool. Even cooler: Zola Jeus and her badass band are set to open for the xx on dates from their just-announced fall U.S. tour. All Zola dates-- and info on a new EP-- below:
A new as-yet-untitled Zola Jesus EP is due October 12 via Sacred Bones. The release will feature three new songs also to be included on a European reissue of the recent Stridulum due out August 23, along with two even newer songs the band will record in New York next month.
Also, Former Ghosts-- Freddy Ruppert's electronic-tinged project featuring Zola and Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart-- have a second LP due on Upset the Rhythm in September called New Love. And, finally, the singer pops up on Fucked Up's new single "Year of the Ox", out September 12 on Merge.
Fact: Zola Jesus is on her motherfucking grind right now.

-- Earlier this year, Devon Clifford, the drummer for the Canadian dance-punk band You Say Party! We Say Die!, died of a brain hemorrhage after an onstage collapse. The band will continue on without him, but they've changed their name, quite understandably, to simply You Say Party. (No exclamation mark, even.) Also, keyboardist Krista Loewen has left the band. Robert Andow and Bobby Siadat, members of the Vancouver band Gang Violence, will take over on keyboards and drums.
-- As previously reported, Admiral Radley is a new band made up of members of Grandaddy and Earlimart, including former Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle. They'll release I Heart California, their first album as a band, on July 13, and you can hear the title track here.
-- On July 13, the Canadian indie duo PS I Love You will self-release their self-titled debut EP. It'll include an early version of the BNM'ed track "Facelove".
-- Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia has maybe the coolest name I've ever seen on a live music venue. The space (an actual fortress,...
Music journalists think spelling 'new' in a wacky way implies bleeding-edge modernity. But no prefix can make the Boden's-catalogue folk of Mumford & Sons sound interesting
Every reader will have their own ideas as to what the major talking points of the last six months in music might be. It would probably be unreasonable to expect everyone to join me in identifying these as the extent to which Tinie Tempah actually got away with rhyming "Arms house" and "Aunt's house"; how it is possible for Jack Rose and Ali Farka Toure's two great guitar valedictions (Luck in the Valley and Ali and Toumani respectively) to sound like they're greeting each other with open arms when you play them back to back; and why it should be that both the year's most uplifting dance albums â€' Caribou's Swim and Four Tet's There Is Love in You â€' seem to have been inspired by Matt Wolf's excellent Arthur Russell documentary Wild Combination. And yet, wouldn't anything be better than reading another article about "nu-folk"?
The inherent nonsensicality of this pallid sub-genre (given that any meaningful definition of "folk music" will have continuity as its cornerstone) is actually the least of its problems. Like nu-metal and nu-rave before it, nu-folk betrays its justifiable insecurity about how much fresh inspiration it actually has to offer by the adoption of the prefix "nu".
Where the intended subtext is one of bleeding-edge modernity...

Hello dear friends. It is our distinct pleasure, this day, to announce what will likely be the last leg of the proper "Monitour," the ongoing promotional exercise behind our latest record, The Monitor. Monitor + tour = "Monitour," remember? Thus far, it has taken us all over these United States, and over a reasonable chunk of Western Europe, and this Autumn, we will fumble across the beautiful American landscape once more to entertain you. A daunting task, we know, for yr palate is sophisticated and yr standards elevated. You deserve the best, and happily for us, we have been able to enlist five of the most entertaining and straight up party rocking young people in all of rock and roll to travel with us and spread the good news about the electric guitar. Who could I be referring to but Philadelphia's number one neo-classic rockers Free Energy?
Our relationship with Free Energy goes all the way back to the Autumn of 2009, when we had just completed our "Bring on the Dudes" tour with our BFFs the So So Glos. We agreed to tack on a show at Georgetown University in DC at the end of the tour. Naturally, after forty or so days of slugging it out on the American indie rock circuit (and putting up with all the SSG's antics), we were dead tired and ready for an evening of zombie-esque behavior. This was until the opening act at the show, a group we had never...

It's weird to think that a year ago we had barely heard of the xx. Now they're one of the indie-verse's biggest new acts, bolstered by an incredible debut LP and an endless string of moody, black-and-white shows. But even these sullen Brits can't play gigs forever-- according to a press release, the trio's upcoming fall tour of North America will be "the last chance to see the band play for quite a while." The excellent L.A. band Warpaint open during the fall trek-- dates below:
In other xx news, on June 26 in New York, Vice's Creators Project hosts something called "xx: A Sculpture of the Album", which is apparently a "3-D physical interpretation" of the band's self-titled record by director Saam Farahmand. More info here.

Next month, a new song and video featuring Best Coast, Kid Cudi, and Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij is set to be released via Converse's website. The song might be about no-frills footwear, or it might not. You will probably end up listening to it at least once if you happen to be online the day it drops. This follows in the tradition of the Julian Casablancas/Pharrell/Santigold Converse song from a few years ago.
As a teaser, watch a video from Converse featuring Best Coast talking about how she's influenced by the sun's rays below:

From Michael Jackson's "Scream" to My Chemical Romance's "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", great music videos are bursts of sound and vision that leave an indelible impression. Director's Cut is a Pitchfork News feature in which we chat with music video directors about their creations. The men and women behind the camera are often overlooked in today's YouTube era, but this feature aims to highlight their hard work while showcasing the best videos currently linking around the internet. A little behind-the-scenes dirt couldn't hurt, too.
For this edition, we spoke with Chris Marrs Piliero, the man behind the absurd clip for the Black Keys' "Next Girl". The video features lots of girls in bikinis lounging by a West Hollywood pool, but instead of a rock or hip-hop star commanding their attention, the star is a puppet dinosaur named Frank. (The tiny green character had originally appeared in a cheap, one-take Black Keys viral teaser.) All the ridiculousness is undercut by self-deprecating text scrolling across the bottom of the screen, written by the Black Keys themselves. It's just dumb enough to be kind of genius. (Marrs Pliero also directed the playground-fight clip for "Tighten Up".)
After studying film at Orange County's Chapman University, Marrs Piliero got into the music video business shooting behind-the-scenes footage of bands like the Used and Linkin Park for MTV2 and Fuse. He got his big break directing...
Long term M.I.A collaborator and N.E.E.T label signing Rye Rye answers a few questions and impresses with an exclusive Dazed freestyle track
After previously lending her vocals to productions from Diplo, Blaqstarr and The Count & Sinden, Rye Rye AKA Ryeisha Berrain is on her own this time as her long-anticipated debut album 'Go! Pop! Bang' is released on M.I.A's N.E.E.T imprint. Rye Rye initially caught the ear of her label boss after overhearing her in the studio and, in the spirit of acronyms; we would definitely like to hear the new material ASAP. In the meantime though, Ryeisha has kindly recorded a freestyle, exclusive to Dazed Digital. We try to find out a little more about what's in store from... article continues »

If you're thinking of playing a song from 1855, be warned. Glastonbury fans want hits, hummable choruses and hippy waffle about 'the vibes'
It's often said that Glastonbury is unique among festivals in that the headline acts are irrelevant. There's so much else to explore. Don't like who's on the Pyramid? Bugger off to Trash City then. Watch Shooglenifty and braid a warlock's beard until dawn. No one's stopping you.
Then again, try telling that to anyone who went when Skunk Anansie headlined (1999). It sucked. A truly memorable festival needs a focal point, something for the bill to build towards. It's critical for artists, too â€' triumph at Glastonbury and you'll become the stuff of legend, referenced by music hacks for decades to come.
Here, then, is some advice for this year's headliners. Muse, Gorillaz and Stevie Wonder take note ...
There's nothing so poignant as watching a band you love while shivering, ashen-faced, in a Pac-a-Mac. The flipside for bands is, if the weather's truly bleak, they get to "save" the festival, as happened with Radiohead in 1997, universally hailed as the best Glastonbury set ever, even by those who were glumly queuing for the long-drops at the time.
Bruce Springsteen made the mistake of playing a hardcore fans' set, as opposed to a crowd-pleasing one, in 2009. "This is a song from 1855," he growled, causing 80,000 people to look stoically to the horizon and idly wonder whether...
The Netherlands doesn't have open arms for tha Doggfather, Radiohead's got a record coming, and Ozzy Osbourne talks up his new album.
In a recent Pitchfork interview, funny guy David Cross talked about the similarities between musicians and comedians: "There's quite an overlap between musicians who have an affection towards comedy and comedians who fantasize about being in a band," he said. "The two worlds have more similarities than they do differences."
With that in mind, we're happy to announce the first ever Pitchfork Music Festival comedy stage! It's hosted by Les Savy Fav frontman (and Pitchfork.tv jokester) Tim Harrington and features veteran stand-up artist Eugene Mirman, "The State"/Wet Hot American Summer star Michael Showalter, "Daily Show" correspondent Wyatt Cenac, and "Saturday Night Live" writer Hannibal Buress. All the jokes go down on Friday, July 16, on the Balance Stage.
The Pitchfork Music Festival takes over Chicago's Union Park July 16-18. Three-day passes for the festival are sold out, as are tickets for Sunday and, as of right now, Saturday. But you can still get passes for Friday here.
The Pitchfork Music Festival's full schedule, including set times, is below.
2010 Pitchfork Music Festival schedule:

Once summer rolls to a close, Vampire Weekend will roll through North America on a severely kickass blockbuster indie tour, with Beach House and Dum Dum Girls opening. We've already reported that. But now we've got good news for the cities left off that initial run: Vampire Weekend have announced more dates on that trek.
Beach House will stay on as openers, but the Very Best will come in to take the Dum Dum Girls' place. That means, among other things, that you may well get to see Ezra Koenig and the Very Best team up on "Warm Heart of Africa" night after night.
It's just the latest addition to a touring schedule that'll keep the Vampire Weekend dudes very, very busy through the middle of October. Dates below.
Vampire Weekend:
06-22 Lille, France - L'Aeronef
06-24 Cornwall, England - Eden Project
06-25 Pilton, England - Glastonbury Festival
06-27 Nijmegen, Netherlands - Rockin' Park Festival
06-29 Stockholm, Sweden - Debaser Medis
07-01 Borlange, Sweden - Peace & Love Festival
07-02 Arendal, Norway - Hove Festival
07-03 Roskilde, Denmark -
In the movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, titular character Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is the bassist of a band called SEX BOB-OMB. So it follows that the comic-book adaptation would feature a whole ton of music. As previously reported, the filmmakers recruited Beck to write all the songs for SEX BOB-OMB. The movie's soundtrack album, due August 10 from ABKCO, features four songs from SEX BOB-OMB, with Beck providing the instrumentation and actors from the movie doing the vocals.
The soundtrack album will also feature unreleased jams from Beck himself, Metric, and Broken Social Scene, credited to the fictional band Crash and the Boys. There's also classic material from T. Rex, the Rolling Stones, and Broken Social Scene again ("Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl" counts as classic now, right?) Plus the 1997 track "Scott Pilgrim" by the Canadian band Plumtree, which inspired comic creator Bryan Lee O'Malley to name his creation in the first place.
The film, which opens wide August 13, also boasts a score from Radiohead/Beck collaborator Nigel Godrich, which will eventually see digital release. Godrich also served as executive producer on the soundtrack album.
We've got the soundtrack's tracklist below, as well as the movie's international trailer, which has been causing a whole ton of dork excitement...

In an interview on BBC 6 yesterday, Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien said the band are currently in the studio wrapping up album number eight, as At Ease points out. "It's genuinely exciting. It's very different from what we did last time. It's really nice to be doing this," he said, contrasting the sessions with the recording of In Rainbows, which he referred to as "a slog."
Talking about a timetable for the release, O'Brien offered the following: "Ideally, it would be great if it came out sometime this year. It has got to; I hope so. We're at the finishing line. When you're making a record, a film, write a book for ages and ages you think the finishing line is miles away. Now it feels it's in touching distance. But of course, it being a creative process, at the last bit also, you have bursts of energy, you achieve a lot of things in a small period of time and then you're nearly there. It might slow down. But yeah, hopefully it will be a matter of weeks."
Listen to the interview here-- it starts around the 42-minute mark.
Dazed reminisce with the Leeds born producer about his collaboration with cover star M.I.A on her new album, /\/\/\Y/\
At the moment, Rusko is appropriately making people go 'OMG'. As the title of his new record, it sees a release on Mad Decent and has left Britney Spears and M.I.A alike beckoning for his input in their respective new material. His distinctive, playful dubstep palette has also seen him become the poster-boy for the genre in the states. Accordingly, the 25-year-old originally from Leeds now finds himself living in LA. However, with no disrespect to Ms. Spears whatsoever, we were interested to find out some more about his collaboration with M.I.A on /\/\/\Y/\. What we didn't expect was for it to involve banana leaves, volcanic rock and nearly being run o... article continues »

London's leading pirate radio station, renowned for promoting grime, continues to rule the airwaves with an official licence
It's been a long time at sea for London's leading pirate radio station, but yesterday Rinse FM finally docked, in the sheltered cove of an Ofcom community licence. Starting in 1994 as a jungle station, Rinse FM has moved through as many underground dance genres as it has secret east London locations, and now, after 16 years, has been awarded a legal place on the FM dial.
In the last decade the station became renowned for its role in the birth of grime and dubstep, forging the talents of Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, Roll Deep, Tinchy Stryder, Skream and many others, and helping DJs Logan Sama and Hatcha to get shows on Kiss FM, and Target on BBC 1Xtra. While the announcement yesterday was a genuine surprise, it's taken a number of years. In 2007 the station's owner Gordon "Geeneus" Warren shared with FACT magazine the ill-kept secret that Rinse was looking for a legal FM licence, and promised it would not follow Kiss FM's decline into commercial mediocrity: "We want to be legal. We don't want to be legal to play stupid adverts and make loads of money from advertising. We want to be legal to say; look at our scene, look at what we're doing. We're a business, we're not criminals. We're supplying something that...
This week, we begin with the soothing tones of Canadian rapper/singer/actor (in that order, perhaps) Drake. The 23-year-old has just released his debut album, Thank Me Later, and explains the background to this soul-searching LP. He also brings Rosie Swash up to speed with his role in teen TV show Degrassi High â€' for those of you unfamiliar with it, it's more Heartbreak High than Byker Grove.
In Singles Club, Caspar Llewellyn Smith rejoices to the sound of Miriam Makeba's Meet Me at the River, Alexis Petridis puts his hands in the air for John Talabot's remix of Al Usher's Silverhum, while Rosie heaps praise on Janelle Monae's Tightrope.
Finally we hear from Derek and Alexis from Sleigh Bells. The New York duo talk volume and unlikely musical inspiration, and reveal how they came to be signed to MIA's record label, NEET.
That's your lot for this week. As of next Friday, Music Weekly will be coming to you direct from Glastonbury, with four daily shows over the course of the festival. You know where to find us if you want to listen (and follow us on Twitter and Facebook too).
Getting off at the wrong bus stop led me to an otherworld of free festivals and brilliant bands. Just don't expect to read about Tragic Roundabout or the Tofu Love Frogs in the music press
And the award for hardest-working artist on the festival circuit goes to ... Florence and the Machine? Hot Chip? Dizzee Rascal? Not likely. It's the DIY stars who really deserve the props â€' relished by veterans of the free festival scene, but never appearing in critics' reviews.
For hardcore festivalgoers, Glastonbury isn't the next fixture, it's this weekend's Solstice. The People's Free festival at Stonehenge no longer exists, so where to go? Watch Tragic Roundabout fire up their chaotic klezmer cauldron in a field somewhere in Worcestershire, join the Hawklords on a retro-space trip on a Welsh farm, or swoon as Eat Static hit the acid-alien-techno button at the Willowman festival on the North Yorkshire moors.
Yet no matter how big, brilliant and groundbreaking the Solstice gathering, you can be fairly certain no national media outlet will bother covering the event â€' a photo of druids at Stonehenge will suffice â€' and the only publicity it will get in the local press is if there's been any trouble.
This cultural otherworld has flourished for more than 40 years (and the bands regularly whip large crowds into a frenzy), but aside from the tireless chronicles of Festival Eye, the nomadic troubadours of the summer...

The cover of July's issue of Dazed & Confused is the one and only M.I.A, shot by Rankin. The Radiohead frontman has advised aspiring musicians to steer clear of major labels. But an evolving industry may still have a role to play in helping artists â€' even Yorke
In a forthcoming book for GCSE students, Thom Yorke advises aspiring musicians to avoid signing to major labels, calling the music business "a sinking ship". His comments were raised this week at the music industry conference Musexpo, which prompted Rob McDermott (manager of Linkin Park and Pantera) to say, "I take issue with someone whose career was built by an industry, only to turn around and lambast it instead of support it."
Radiohead were signed to EMI for 12 years, a label which has been in the news recently for its financial problems, despite the fact its actual revenue rose last year (it also received another injection of funds recently).
One person who doesn't agree with Yorke's pronouncement about the industry is music manager Tim Clark, whose client Robbie Williams is signed to EMI. When I spoke to Clark last week, he did not rule out the possibility that Williams would continue working with the label once his record deal concludes following his greatest hits album. It's a surprising turnaround for someone who just a couple of years ago compared EMI chairman Guy Hands to a plantation owner. So...

Beck's Record Club project-- in which he enlists friends to cover an entire album in a day, then posts the results to his website-- stands as a consistently fascinating ongoing project. At the moment, we're almost done hearing the version of the INXS album Kick that Beck did with St. Vincent, Liars, and Os Mutantes. And now Time Out Chicago reports that Beck has lined up the collaborators for his next Record Club project: Tortoise and Thurston Moore.
According to Time Out, Tortoise visited Beck's studio last weekend, while they were touring the West Coast. The Sonic Youth leader also checked in. No word yet on what album they might've covered or when we'll get to hear it, but Tortoise bassist/guitarist Douglas McCombs tells Time Out that the assembled luminaries played a "broad spectrum of music that was sort of appropriate."
While you let this news percolate, check out St. Vincent's Annie Clark singing the INXS jam "Never Tear Us Apart" as part of the current Record Club project, because damn.
Peaches also invited along her long time friends and collaborators Ssion (”shun”), the queer-punk-performance collective from Kansas city, who rocked the Donau Festival goers with their extravagant mix of sexy disco and dirty party beats!
Check out some of their awesome videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/thession including, of course, the music video they produced for Peaches’ ‘Billionaire’!

The last time Oklahoma psych warriors the Flaming Lips dropped a clip from last year's Embryonic on our noggins, it was for the paranoia-fried jam "Powerless", and featured a girl tied and bound to a chair, accompanied by a monkey. The band's latest video, for fellow album track "The Sparrow Looks Up at the Machine", features what looks like the same girl (and monkey) again-- only this time, she's wearing very little clothing and being physically tortured by mysterious, hooded figures. There's tons of blood. So, yeah, definitely NSFW, unless you work at a pretty fucked-up place. Check out the video below, or at Pitchfork.tv.

-- Inversions of the Colossus features instrumental versions of the vocal tunes on RJD2's recent The Colossus along with seven new tracks. It's out June 22 on MP3, vinyl, and CD via RJ's Electrical Connections.
-- Trip-hop mainstays Zero 7 release their greatest hits comp June 28 via Atlantic. The record-- called Record-- also features a bonus disc of old and new remixes from a really nice roster of producers: Carl Craig, Joker, Madlib, and others.
-- Watch blissfully tipsy sets from Blitzen Trapper and Devotchka at this year's Telluride Wine Festival, which goes down June 24-27 in Telluride, Colorado.
TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek has a new solo project called Maximum Balloon and-- based on its lone press photo and the cover of first single "Tiger" (left)-- he's taking the whole balloon thing pretty literally. And, hey, who doesn't like balloons? Nobody, that's who. Take a listen to "Tiger", which features vocals from Dragons of Zynth's Aku, over at the official Maximum Balloon web space.
Related: A new Esquire video featuring irrationally sexy model Daisy Lowe dancing to "Tiger" is available here. (She's the girl sitting upside down on the "Tiger" sleeve, too.)
The Maximum Balloon album is due August 24 via DGC/Interscope and will feature several yet-to-be-named guest vocalists including Karen O, David Byrne (Byrne is not confirmed at press time), TVOTR's Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone, Little Dragon's Yukimi Nagano, Holly Miranda, and Theophilus London.
You can buy "Tiger" on iTunes starting tomorrow.

On May 8th 2010 the 5th Annual Donau Festival landed in the Lower Austrian town of Krems an der Donau, fronted by PEACHES who was invited this year to curate the special event. Needless to say, the Festival was a huge success!

Those plastic drums currently taking up real estate in your apartment could get some company soon. This holiday season, Harmonix and MTV Games will release the third installment in their Rock Band game series. This one, like previous entries, will include guitar, bass, vocals, and drums, but it'll also feature keyboards and three-part harmonies, all for up to seven players simultaneously. There's also the new Rock Band Pro Mode, which more accurately simulates what it's like to actually play real instruments. Pretty soon, you'll need an actual garage just to fit your video-game band.
The new Rock Band will feature 83 songs and access to a library of over 2,000 songs by the time the game launches, with new music regularly added. The new game's tracklist includes classic-rock perennials like Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, and Night Ranger ("Sister Christian", fuck yeah!) as well as more contemporary selections like Phoenix's "Lasso", the Cure's "Just Like Heaven", the White Stripes' "The Hardest Button to Button", Rilo Kiley's "Portions for Foxes", Metric's "Combat Baby", and Ida Maria's "Oh My God".
To see all the announced songs from the tracklist, check out the game's website. USA Today has posted a video that includes people from Harmonix showing what the new game can do; click below to watch it.

Rough Trade matches/artists/DJ’s will be announced...
Basement Jaxx will be DJ’ing sporadically around the world this Summer. They’ll be playing on top of the Royal Opera House in Stockholm in June as a free party to celebrate the Crown Princess of Sweden’s marriage (!) before flying to Los Angeles to play at the Electric Daisy Carnival later the same month. There will be a handful more shows in September, to be confirmed, before ending the Summer at the We Love Space closing party in Ibiza. Hopefully we’ll see you somewhere along the way…

After Jack White and Conan O'Brien teased some sort of happening going down at Jack White's Third Man headquarters last night, something indeed did go down at the Nashville home of White's label. A rock show. With Conan bringing his current touring band out in front of a few hundred people to play a host of tunes they've been running through during their "Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour", reports Team Coco.
Highlights included Conan and Jack teaming up for a version of Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock", and, of course, Conan's version of Radiohead's "Creep". The performance was recorded and "is going to be pressed into a record that people at the show could buy," according to Conan's site. So look for that on eBay soon.
UPDATE: While a limited edition blue and black version of the LP will only be available to those at the show, a regular version of the LP will also be available for purchase by anybody, via the Third Man site. And Conan also recorded a spoken word 7" that will be released by Third Man in the future.
In the meantime, check out Jack introducing his buddy and graciously throwing water to fans who waited all day in the Nashville heat to see the show below:

Modular and DFA's Aussie band Canyons are back with their own label...
The Canyons are comprised of Leo Thomson (aka Leo Holiday) and Ryan Grieve (aka Ryan Sea-mist). The DJ/Producer team began making music in Perth before moving to Sydney which they now call home. They first began getting recognition overseas by doing releases through their own label, A Hole in the Sky, to DFA. They are renowned for their discovery of Tame Impala, and have completed remixes with such bands as Empire of the Sun, Ladyhawke, Tame Impala and Lost Valentinos. When Dazed Digital caught up with them in their studio in Sydney, they were busy working on their debut album which will be released through Modular Records in the near future.

This week's show kicks off with 2010's most prolific pop star, Robyn. The With Every Heartbeat singer returns with the first of three (three!) albums this year, and she tells Rosie Swash why she's doing this in such a short space of time. Robyn also explains why she's finally found her sound â€' apparently, it was down the back of the sofa all this time.
In Singles Club, The Swash joins Alexis Petridis and Dorian Lynskey to dissect Mark Ronson's Circuit Breaker, MIA's I'm a Singer (which we mistakenly referred to as Haters, sorry!), and Aeroplane's We Can't Fly.
And finally, we hear from UK garage pioneer MJ Cole about what inspired his return to the dance scene after a lengthy hiatus.
That's all for this week, but we'll be back next Friday. In the meantime, come and find us on Twitter or Facebook. Enjoy!
Musician Jeff Beck performs for a celebrity crowd in New York to honour rock guitar pioneer Les Paul, who died last year.
last night sigur ros won “the mojo outstanding contribution to music” award at the mojo awards show in london.
phil alexander (mojo’s editor-in-chief): “sigur ros are widely recognised as men of mystery. their enigmatic presence is matched by their music. having a member of radiohead, philip selway, present this award tells you just how much fellow musicians love them. they are like a latter day pink floyd – transporting and epic. and their contribution to music can be heard and felt everywhere.”
the band were in attendance to accept the prize. you can read more about the other award winners on the mojo website.

Last week was all about the power of the flower, but from here on in, we're living for the weekend
After a week giving each other flowers, I hope everyone is full of the joys of early summer. Rather that than full of dread at the inexorable approach of autumn and all the withering decay that accompanies it. I was struck last week by how flowers provoked just as much melancholy in musicians as they did ecstasy, and I hope we have an A list that reflects that dichotomy.
The A List (and column discussing it): Kylie Minogue and Nick Cave â€' Where the Wild Roses Grow; The Zombies â€' A Rose for Emily; Noel Coward â€' London Pride; Ahmad Jamal â€' Poinciana; Georges Bizet â€' The Flower Song; Laura Cantrell â€' When the Roses Bloom Again; Tony Joe White â€' Polk Salad Annie; Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks â€' Gardenia; Tindersticks â€' Cherryblossom; The Jaynetts â€' Sally Go Round the Roses.
And now, a bouquet of B:
White Stripes â€' Blue Orchid
What witchcraft here? Someone, somehow has taken a white orchid and turned it blue. Jack White can muster only one response and that is to forge a hook of such overpowering ferocity, that the orchid turns itself white again.
Animal Collective â€' In the Flowers
Typically outre effort from the digitally encrypted Beach Boys, with a couple of ecstatic lines about losing one's self amidst the flowers.
XTC â€' Humble Daisy
More Beach Boys flavours, more escapism, but...

From the Pharcyde's "Drop" to Rancid's "Salvation", great music videos are bursts of sound and vision that leave an indelible impression.
The video for Vampire Weekend's sunny ska lark "Holiday", from veteran directing duo the Malloys, is either a "Monkees"-esque absurdist romp or a sly send-up of the band's well-heeled image. Maybe it's both. In the clip, the Vampire Weekend kids don royal-court finery and lamp around L.A., beating up surfers, chowing down on lavish deserts, and generally wreaking havoc like true elites. The video has a dizzy California energy that the Malloys have previously brought to videos from MTV mainstays like Blink-182 and Avril Lavigne.
The Malloys are true music video O.G.s; they've worked with everyone from the White Stripes (Emmett Malloy directed their documentary Under Great White Northern Lights) and the Shins to Crazy Town and Alien Ant Farm. You've probably seen their videos millions of...

As a warm up for their comeback summer festival shows, the Strokes took to the 500-capacity venue Dingwalls, located in London's Camden neighborhood, last night. They performed under the name Venison.
According to an NME report, the quintet played 18 songs (setlist below) but didn't debut any new material. Watch them do "Last Nite" below-- doesn't look like they hate each other too much (via Zane Lowe). Last we heard, the fourth Strokes album is due next year.

The annual iTunes Festival has turned into something of a beast since its modest launch with a small but powerful line-up at the ICA in 2007.
This year's festival at London's Roundhouse is giving away 60,000 tickets for gigs scattered throughout July - but an astonishing two million people have applied for them.
The iTunes Festival isn't a big money spinner in Apple terms; it's free, for starters. But this is a powerful marketing exercise for Apple, putting the virtual iTunes brand into the real world and reinforcing it with live artists. We also know how powerful live music and events are for driving music sales. I asked Apple for any figures on how influential the iTunes Festival is in that respect, but they couldn't comment.
The festival does generate exclusive content for the iTunes store, however - 60 tracks from the live recordings that go on sale in all 23 iTunes stores. A duet between Florence Welch and Dizzie Rascal at this year's Brit Awards in February was sold exclusively through iTunes five hours after the gig, and generated enough sales to push the track to number one.

This year's festival includes The XX, Ellie Goulding and Phoenix, along with Tony Bennett and Ozzy Osbourne. We can only hope that latter two decide to do a duet. (*Pretty please*)
What else is Apple brewing...
Jeff Beck honored his late friend and mentor, Les Paul, with an intimate performance at his favorite haunt, the Iridium Jazz Club.
Shortly before hitting the stage at the ‘La Route Du Rock Festival’, in St. Malo, France on 16th August 2009, Peaches steps up into the ring with some members of the local Press for a short Q&A battle!
Here are some highlights!
According to Conan O'Brien's Twitter: "Jack White & I are doing something cool tomorrow night. Hint: it involves a LOT of Tears for Fears songs."
The post leads to a video of Mr. White putting up the poster you see above outside his label Third Man's headquarters in Nashville. (The clip is awesomely soundtracked by recent White collaborator Jay-Z's "D.O.A. (Death of AutoTune)" and embedded below.) So yeah, Nashville residents-- get in line now.
Weird to think it was only a little more than a year ago that the White Stripes were sending Conan off to his ill-fated "Tonight Show" run. Ah, memories.
Conan is set to bring his current comedy tour to Bonnaroo this weekend.

Radiohead singer Thom Yorke tells aspiring musicians to avoid the "sinking ship" of major record labels.
The last time electro duo Ratatat came around these parts with a video from the just-released LP4, it was a clip for "Party with Children" featuring just a bird... and that's pretty much it. While the label told us that the clip was just a teaser for the official video, the final cut still hasn't made the rounds yet.
Nonetheless, Ratatat are back with more visual accompaniment, this time for LP4's "Mahalo". Like its predecessor, nothing much happens in this video, which was directed by band member Evan Mast and premiered on Spinner today. We're treated to footage of a boat ride through Southeast Asia. Check out the video below.
The folks behind the Lollapalooza festival have just announced the schedule for the three-day marathon, which comes to Chicago's Grant Park August 6-8. And as with any gigantic eight-stage festival, you might need a little help navigating the monstrously huge festival. So we've highlighted some of the artists playing all those stages below.
Scheduling conflicts, of course, abound. On Friday night, you'll have to pick which brand of decadent New York glamor you prefer, as the Strokes and Lady Gaga go head-to-head. Soul fans won't be happy having to pick between Mavis Staples and Raphael Saadiq. And good luck deciding who to see in the Friday afternoon Dirty Projectors/Fuck Buttons/Matt and Kim scheduling block.

The 2010 World Cup runs June 11 to July 11 in South Africa. Of course, it's a global phenomenon-- and the only time most U.S. citizens will remotely care about soccer (or, as the rest of the world knows it, football). The World Cup is such a sensation that many musicians have taken the time out of their busy schedules to write songs especially for it.
Big-name artists like R. Kelly, Shakira, Wyclef, and Pitbull contributed to the official World Cup album, Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album. The Fall's Mark E. Smith mumbles through a song called "England's Heartbeat" with his side project Shuttleworth. Dizzee Rascal was enlisted by Simon Cowell on a new version of Tears for Fears' "Shout" called "Shout for England", also featuring British actor James Corden. And plenty of smaller artists have been struck by World Cup fever, like We Are Scientists and South Africa's own BLK JKS, who are set to perform at a huge kick-off show in Johannesburg Thursday, June 10.
Listen to a sampling of World Cup songs below.

The train of goodies from Gil Scott-Heron's BNM'd record, I'm New Here, keeps rolling on with a clip for the album's sparse, acoustic guitar-led, Bill Callahan-penned title track. In the clip, directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, the spoken-word luminary (accompanied by Oakley Hall guitarist Pat Sullivan) rhapsodizes in a studio setting while images of him walking through New York are projected on the walls around him. Check it out below. (via IFC)
Christina Aguilera's album is disappointingly predictable. Is she just the latest artist to suffer from record label intervention?
In his review, Alexis Petridis called Christina Aguilera's Bi-On-Ic "occasionally brilliant and brave, occasionally teeth gritting and stupid". Well the biggest disappointment arises out of how much more brilliant and brave it could have been had it not been for someone, possibly Aguilera's record label RCA, getting cold feet regarding the original vision of the album.
As Alexis points out, the wonderful Ladytron collaboration Birds Of Prey has been relegated to the bonus disc. But so has the duo of great Santigold tracks, Monday Morning and Bobblehead. At least they had a better fate than the Goldfrapp co-writes and her cover of Ladyhawke's My Delirium and (according to collaborator Sia) the proposed first single; the dubby sounding title track, all of which missed the boat. These snippets of information, however, give a tantalising insight into what the album could have been.
From early quotes about Bi-On-Ic, it seemed like it would be experimental, driven by alternative pop classics. During interviews for 2008's Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade Of Hits, Christina said her next album would sound "futuristic", taking pop art cues from, of all people, The Velvet Underground and Nico. As if this wasn't mind-boggling enough, Johanna Fateman from Le Tigre excitedly blogged that "Deceptacon was Christina's jam", while Ladytron's Reuben Wu revealed the former Mouseketeer played Elastica in her car.

This beautiful cover of the Smog track is a highlight from Scott-Heron's latest album
Primarily known as the aching falsetto behind Bon Iver, Justin Vernon also infrequently plays in the Shouting Matches, a garage-blues duo with Peter Wolf Crier's Brian Moen. As TwentyFourBit points out, Vernon reunited with Moen for a show in Altoona, Wisconsin last weekend.
As we can see in the video below, Vernon dressed the way the Blues Brothers would if somebody forced them to buy all their clothes from the J. Crew catalog, and he and Moen played a pretty nasty, solo-happy version of the Son House blues standard "Death Letter", also covered by the White Stripes on De Stijl. Vernon never gets quite as unhinged as Jack White, but still! Who knew Justin Vernon had this in him?
as you may have noticed, the ole TnT are gonna be playing some shows this summer. we just put announced a few of 'em up on our shows page. and there's gonna be more...

Just days after Vampire Weekend and Stephen Colbert stopped by Conan O'Brien's comedy tour in NYC, they crossed paths once again on "The Colbert Report" last night. When you get some of the most famous people in the universe into the same room, deeply silly things sometimes happen. Like, say, the President of the United States joining one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived, one of the most famous comedians of all time, and Jack Motherfucking White, as well as a mob of other celebrities, in belting out "Hey Jude" like drunks at closing time. That's what happened last night, when President Obama presented Sir Paul McCartney with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at the White House.
PBS taped the entire show for a July 28 broadcast. The New York Times reports that the show included White singing "Mother Nature's Son", which could be awesome. Below, you can watch video of Obama and his family, McCartney, Seinfeld, White, Stevie Wonder, Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, and others singing "Hey Jude" (via Consequence of Sound) and Obama presenting McCartney with the prize (via Stereogum).

"M.I.A., the Glenn Beck of the left."
-- Decemberists singer Colin Meloy really wants M.I.A. to make a diss track about him, apparently. (via @colinmeloy)
After that controversial M.I.A. article in The New York Times Magazine and those controversial Twitter posts about writer Lynn Hirschberg and then the controversial audio snippets from the interview that M.I.A. posted, the Gray Lady has posted a correction to the original piece, the Daily Swarm points out. Somehow, it's not really that controversial:
"The cover article in The Times Magazine on Sunday profiled the singer and political activist M.I.A. While discussing her efforts to draw attention to the civil war in her home country, Sri Lanka, she was quoted as saying: 'I wasn't trying to be like Bono. He's not from Africa-- I'm from there. I'm tired of pop stars who say, 'Give peace a chance.' I'd rather say, 'Give war a chance.' The whole point of going to the Grammys was to say, 'Hey, 50,000 people are gonna die next month, and here's your opportunity to help.' And no one did.'
While M.I.A. did make those remarks, she did not make the entire statement at the same point in the interview, or in the order in which it was presented. The part that begins, 'The whole point of going to the Grammys,' up to the end of the quotation, actually came first. The part that begins, 'I wasn't trying to be like Bono,' and ends, 'Give war a chance,' came later in the same interview. The article should have made clear that the two quotations came...
With an imminent hits collection, a stadium tour, and confirmed studio time with Jack White and Dr. Dre, it's clear that Jay-Z hasn't been spending his post-Blueprint 3 days relaxing on the beach (if he were, though, at least we know what he'd be sitting in). While it's unclear if those White and Dre collaborations will ever see the light of day, a new track from Hov himself, "Ultra", has been making the rap-blog rounds this morning.
Grab a listen to a DJ drop-filled version of "Ultra" over at Nah Right.

Being a music critic is no barrier to enjoying big, loud, dumb music. But age most certainly is ...
My dad always prided himself on bening open to new music in middle age. When I started buying records and going to gigs myself, he embraced the Jesus and Mary Chain, Nirvana, Radiohead and the Prodigy. But one day in 1996, when we were watching the Fugees perform their cover of Killing Me Softly on Top of the Pops, he said: "It's a lovely song but why does that bloke [Wyclef Jean] have to talk over it?" And he suddenly sounded old.
My dad was 33 when Rapper's Delight came out, and 40 by the time Run DMC crashed the UK charts, and hip-hop marked the generation gap that he couldn't bridge. Now that I'm 36, I wonder whether Pendulum might be my Killing Me Softly.
In 2010, there is less music to estrange an older listener than there used to be. The great pop music revolutions â€' rock'n'roll, punk, hip-hop, acid house â€' were seismic sonic shifts that, to some listeners, sounded like an intolerable din, inviting cries of "Call that music? It's just noise!" But in the last two decades no genre has shifted the ground anywhere near as dramatically, hence the common sight of the savvy parent accompanying their offspring to concerts and festivals. Teenagers want...

As Vulture points out, the entire soundtrack album for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, due June 8 from Chop Shop/Atlantic, is now streaming at the soundtrack album's website. Even if you don't particularly care about the coming werewolf/vampire rumble, it's worth a listen, as the album features new tracks from Vampire Weekend, the Dead Weather, Battles, Band of Horses, Florence and the Machine, Metric, the Black Keys, and Cee-Lo Green, as well as a Beck/Bat for Lashes team-up. In related news, you kids out there should be advised that "I'm going to fight for you until your heart stops beating" is really not an acceptable pick-up line.
Last night, I was lucky enough to attend the New York City stop of Conan O'Brien's "Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour" at Radio City Music Hall. Along with bringing back classic characters and bits-- Masturbating Bear, Triumph, the "Walker, Texas Ranger" Lever-- a few special guests popped by. Vampire Weekend did a beefed-up take on "Walcott" with Conan on rhythm guitar, and then Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart popped up for a lethal dance-off. Watch it all below.
There are a few "Legally Prohibited" shows left if you're interested in laughing.

Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart Dance-Off (live at Radio City Music Hall, June 1, 2010):
If you thought M.I.A. would try something a bit more tasteful and discreet with the album cover for her third LP, you don't know M.I.A. The / \ / \ / \ Y / \ front is about as blitzing as one would expect, with the provocateur of the moment trapped behind a wall of YouTube players. (Via Rap-Up.) Will she be able to break free of such online censorship or perish beneath the weight of a mass media conspiracy (supposedly) hell bent on taking her down?! Tune in next time!
/ \ / \ / \ Y / \ is out July 13.

M.I.A. feud with profile writer Lynn Hirschberg continues, Aerosmith back together for tour, Temptations' Ali-Ollie Woodson passes away, OneRepublic tell "Secrets".
Last time we heard from Chicago hip-hop duo the Cool Kids was a year ago, when they dropped the Gone Fishing mixtape in anticipation of their official debut, When Fish Ride Bicycles. It's one year later, and there's still no release date in sight for When Fish Ride Bicycles. But they do have a new mixtape.
If you head over to the Cool Kids' website, you can grab their new mixtape, Tacklebox, right now (that's the quite-literal cover art above). The 15-track mixtape features an appearance from Bronx R&B singer and frequent Cool Kids collaborator Tennille, and was made in conjunction with the L.A.-based rap blog the Los Angeles Leakers (yes, you read that right).

M.I.A.'s attack on The New York Times and journalist Lynn Hirschberg continues. After the paper published a not-altogether-flattering M.I.A. feature story written by Hirschberg, Maya hit back by posting Hirschberg's personal cell phone number on her Twitter on Thursday. Later that day, M.I.A. Tweeted, "NEWS IS AN OPINION! UNEDITED VERSION OF THE INTERVIEW WILL BE ON neetrecordings THIS MEMORIAL WEEKEND!!! >>>>"
As promised, M.I.A. has posted clips of that interview on the blog of her record label N.E.E.T., under the heading "War Crimes and French Fries". She also posted a new song.
On the internet, one of the most hotly discussed aspects of the piece was what M.I.A. ate during one of the interviews, which took place at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Hirschberg wrote, "Unity holds no allure for Maya â€" she thrives on conflict, real or imagined. 'I kind of want to be an outsider,' she said, eating a truffle-flavored French fry. 'I don't want to make the same music, sing about the same stuff, talk about the same things. If that makes me a terrorist, then I'm a terrorist.'" This could be interpreted as Hirschberg trying to frame M.I.A. as a hypocrite,...

Check out selected write-ups of some of the night's big sets, plus a few shots from last night below; then head over to our photo book for full photo sets by Shannon McClean and Elisabeth Vitale.
Owen Pallett [Rockdelux Auditori; 4 p.m.]

The first time I saw Owen Pallett perform live, he was still called Final Fantasy. It was 2004, and he was the opening act for a little band called Arcade Fire. Needless to say, the crowd was hankering for the headline act, but after witnessing Pallett's violin-looping solo show, the audience was on its feet, howling for an encore. Since then Pallett's live reputation has only grown, as evidenced by an enormous Barcelona crowd that greeted him with hushed tones. Pallett's performance was a selection of material from albums new and old: a little He...
