Over the next 4 weeks, Africa Express and music store Rough Trade East will celebrate the FIFA World Cup with a series of in-store match screenings fused with African inspired live performances and DJ sets.
Working with Africa Express, Rough Trade have invitedCheikh Lô (Senegal), Muntu Valdo (Cameroon) Afrika Boy (Nigeria), Gangbe Brass Band (Benin) and M3NSA (Ghana), while the DJs include Philipe Cohen-Solal(Gotan Project) and Spain’s El Guincho, to perform in-store with key matches. There will also be a special instore set by Tony Allen with Damon Albarn and guests. More names will be announced as the tournament progresses.

Matches will be shown on a giant on-stage screen, 2.5m2, using the very latest HD satellite and projection technology
Artists will perform for half an hour in the build up to kick-off, after which they will play at half time and following the final whistle
DJ’s will mix live commentary into bespoke live sets, creating an authentic cultural atmosphere for the teams playing, e.g. El Guincho is creating a set that fuses Spanish and South American influence for the Spain v Chile match on Friday 25th June
The first screening will be on Saturday 12th June, when Philipe Cohen-Solalof Gotan Project fame will set a quintessentially passionate Afro-Latin tone to the Argentina v Nigeria match, KO 3pm BST.
